World Matchplay 2024 Preview – The World Matchplay 2024 gets under way on Saturday. One of the best tournaments on the PDC circuit takes place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. Many darts players and fans would say this is their favorite tournament of the year and if you haven’t watched it before you will certainly be able to see why, when you watch it this year. Last year’s winner, Nathan Aspinall, will be looking to defend his title but knows it won’t be easy, as Luke Humphries (the world number one) and Luke Littler, might have something to say about that.

World Matchplay 2024 Preview – Format
The World Matchplay is very simple in how it works. The top 16 players in the world are seeded and then draw against the other 16 players who qualified, based on the pro tour order of merit. There are some stand out games in the first round. Michael Smith will come up against “The Flying Scotsman” Gary Anderson. There’s a mouth watering tie in the first round between the 3 time World Matchplay Champion Michael Van Gerwen and the reigning Premier League champion, Luke “The Nuke” Littler. As I said before, the format is very simple, it’s a knockout format all the way until the final. All the games have to be won by at least two clear legs, which is what makes this tournament so exciting. Games can be extended by an extra six legs until it goes to a last leg decider. The first round is the first to 10 legs, second round is first to 11 legs, Quarter Finals is first to 16 legs, Semi Final is first to 17 legs and the Final is first to 18 legs.

World Matchplay 2024 Preview – Predictions
The first round draw has really set this tournament up to be an absolute classic, as it always is! I can definitely see some big names exiting in the first round. The first and most obvious one is MVG, as he comes up against Luke Littler, in a blockbuster first round tie. I can definitely see Littler winning this one and progressing through to the next round, therefore meaning Van Gerwen taking an early trip home. Another one of the seeded players I can see getting knocked out in the first round is Dimitri Van Den Berg. He comes up against Martin Schindler who has been in excellent form this year and has earned him his spot at the World Matchplay.
There’s a few players in this tournament who I feel can be real dark horses and surprise a few people. The first of them is the young Northern Irishmen who played superb at the World Cup of Darts and I believe he’s got the ability to go far in this tournament. The other outsider that I think could make an impact on the World Matchplay stage is Ryan Searle, he’s been consistently good on the pro tour although maybe hasn’t had as good of a year as he had last. Nevertheless, is a very good player and has got the capability to go far.
Now onto the winner. There’s loads of names that jump out when you think of who could be lifting the World Matchplay trophy on the 21st of July. The one that stands out for me, is probably the one that stands out for a lot of people as well, Luke Humphries. He’s simply been the best player in the world of darts this year so it’s very hard to look past him winning it, especially after his recent performances at the World Cup of Darts.
The World Matchplay is an official PDC tournament.
