Premier League Birmingham, Van Gerwen makes it four

Premier League Darts Birmingham Review: Micheal Van Gerwen made it four nightly Premier League wins in Birmingham when he defeated the teenage sensation Luke Littler in the final beating him 6-3. Van Gerwen played nowhere near his best in the final, only averaging 90, however, it was enough to comfortably beat Littler, who was also well below par, averaging 88. It was a very tight match and after 6 legs it was level. Then MVG went on to reel three consecutive legs off and win the match 6 legs to 3. Michael moves above Aspinall into third lace and only four points off the man he beat in the final, Luke Littler. After the match, Van Gerwen said, “ Nobody likes losing, so to bounce back with a win is always nice”. See match stats below.

The game of the night came in the semi-finals when Luke Littler came up against Luke Humphries, with Littler coming out on top, winning in a deciding leg 6-5. This is now the 6th consecutive win that Littler has over Humphries. I think I speak for everyone when I say that 11 legs of darts was not enough for this match. It was edge of the seat stuff! Littler crucially hit a 12 dart break of throw in the 3rd leg to deny Humphries from going 3-0 up, which would have put him in real control of the match. Then the next two legs were something special from the 17 year old. He had two consecutive nine dart attempts. This saw him take the lead over Humphries and go 3-2 up. Luke Humphries forced a deciding leg, after coming back from 5-2 down. Then Littler hit double 14 to win a classic match and progress through to the final. See match stats below.

In Littler’s first game, he came up against Rob Cross, who is in desperate need of picking up points. Rob put up a real fight against Luke. In the end Littler was just too much for him and beat the former World Champion, in a last leg decider, 6-5. Both players held their throws in their opening two legs, with cross hitting 102 checkout, to make it a leg a piece. Cross then went on to win the next two legs, however, the teenager fought back and took out 42 to level the game 3-3. In the ninth leg, Rob broke Luke’s throw, making it 5-4, and giving him the darts to throw for the match. If you’ve learned one thing from this match, it’s never to right anyone off. Littler won the match, pinning double nine, after missing two at double 18. There was respect between the two players at the end of the match, after a brilliant game of darts. See match stats below.

Another one of the brilliant matches that took place in Birmingham, was the last quarter-final between Michael Van Gerwen and Nathan Aspinall. The match ended 6-4 to Van Gerwen but Aspinall did not make it easy for him. In the fifth leg of the match, Aspinall took the lead, checking out 85, with a bullseye finish. Van Gerwen got lucky in the seventh leg. He went for treble 18 and it slipped into the treble four, leaving him to hit the single 18 and then pin double tops, to make it 4-4. If that first dart had gone in the four, he would have needed either a single for a bullseye finish, or a treble, to leave a double. So a happy accident for the former World Champ! This gave Van Gerwen momentum. He then went on to take out a 152 to make it 5-4 and then won the next leg, to win the match and see him move through to the semi-finals. See match stats below.
