Magnificent Humphries wins Matchplay – Luke Humphries won his first World Matchplay title on Sunday, becoming only the second player to win the tournament averaging above 100 in every match. In the first round he came up against Ricardo Pietrekzco. Humphries started the game how you’d expect he broke Ricardo twice which put him 4-0 against the German. Pietrekzco started to show he wasn’t going down without a fight, he pulled the game back to 6-3 hitting an 11 darter and averaging 104. Luke, like we’ve seen him do so many times, just blew Pietrkzco away, he averaged just over 108 and won the game 10-4. See match stats below.

Magnificent Humphries wins Matchplay – Round 2
In round two Luke Humphries faced Stephen Bunting in what promised to be a cracker. In the first leg Humphries just about held his throw after Bunting missed two darts at double. Luke went into the first break 3-2 up but Bunting was holding his own against Humphries who was averaging 108. Stephen then produced the first break a throw in the match, taking out 126 on the bull to go 4-3 up. It did not last long with Humphries breaking straight back then holding his throw to make it 5-4. This game was really turning into a classic. Yet again the game flipped with Bunting holding throw then managing to break to make it 6-5 to him. Humphries then went on a little run, picking up three consecutive legs. This saw him go 8-6 up, and have a two leg cushion for the first time in the match. Bunting did manage to pull a leg back but he wasn’t able to stop Luke Humphries who won the game 11-7. See match stats below.

Magnificent Humphries wins Matchplay – Quarter Finals
The Quarter Finals saw Luke Humphries come up against Belgium’s number one Dimitri Van Den Berg. The players went into the first break with Humphries leading three legs to two, Dimitri was doing all he can to stay in it. After the break Van Den Berg won his fourth leg on the spin and completely turned the game on its head making it 4-3. Both players kept battling away and went into the second break with five legs a piece after Humphries took out 79. In the 15th leg Humphries went six darts into a nine darter before missing his seventh. He still ended up hitting a ten dart leg to go 8-7 up. Luke then started to pull away, he took out 115 to go two legs ahead of Dimitri. Van Den Berg kept fighting away and crucially made the game 11-9 before the break, had he lost that leg they would have been going into the break at 12-8 to Humphries.
Then the 22nd leg showed why we all love darts. The game was sat at 11-10 both players seemed to be letting the pressure get to them. Then out of nowhere Van Den Berg hit back to back 180s and after he did the second one, he sort of rolled his shoulder back and forth. Dimitri was then sat on 52 ready to break throw and level the game, however Humphries had something to say about that. He took out 106 and then celebrated by rolling his shoulders back and forth. The crowd loved it, the commentators loved it and even Dimitri gave him a first pump and a smile. This was almost the turning point in the game because after this Humphries did not lose a leg and won the game 16-10. See match stats below.

Magnificent Humphries wins Matchplay – Semi Finals
Then onto the Semi Final, Luke Humphries came up against James Wade who had a fantastic run to make it to the Semi Finals. Humphries started like he had the majority of his games, he stormed into a two leg lead breaking Wade’s throw in the first leg. James managed to get back to 3-2 before the first break, with an 103 average it’s a side to Wade’s game that we haven’t seen very often. In the ninth leg “The Machine” James Wade took the lead in the match with a 12 dart leg, making the game 5-4. After the break Wade made the game 6-5 with a 101 checkout which we’ve seen him hit so many times down the years. Humphries then went on a little run which he always seems to do. This made the game 8-6 before James pulled a leg back meaning it was 8-7 going into the third break. Now this is where Humphries really turned it up. He came out onto the stage and firstly hit a ten dart leg to make it 9-7, then to break throw he hit an 11 dart leg which put him three legs clear of Humphries. It was then more of the same from “CoolHand” Luke Humphries as just like he did against Dimitri he stormed to victory, winning 17-10 against a really good James Wade. See match stats below.

Magnificent Humphries wins Matchplay – The Final
Luke Humphries came up against the three time World Matchplay Champion Michael Van Gerwen in the Final. The first leg saw MVG take advantage of Humphries missed darts at double and take a 1-0 lead. Van Gerwen led 3-2 at the first break and was by far the better player at this point in the match. That did not last for long though as Luke won the next four legs to make the game 6-3. Michael did take out 25 in the tenth leg to make it six legs to four at the second break. After the break Humphries won two consecutive legs checkin out 141 to put him 7-5 up. The next few legs were a bit of a battle but Humphries went three legs ahead of Van Gerwen at 9-6 then it stayed that way till 11-8. However MVG won that crucial leg before the fourth break to make the game 11-9.
In the 23rd leg Van Gerwen pinned double tops to take out 106 and crucially break the Humphries throw and go one leg away from the World Champ. Then Another ton plus finish from Michael saw the game go level at 12 legs a piece. Luke then found a two leg lead by breaking the Van Gerwen throw to go 14-12 up. MVG wasn’t going down without a fight and was showing real quality to stay in this as he broke straight back. This game was unpredictable, Humphries broke straight back and then took out 131 to hold his throw and go 16-13 up. The game wasnt over yet though, Michael hit a 160 to break and then held his throw which made the game 16-15 to Humphries. Van Gerwen made a big mistake in the next leg when he missed four darts at double to make the game 16-16. Humphries capitalized on that which put him one away from victory. It was deja vu for Van Gerwen when he missed three darts at double eight to win the leg which left Humphries the chance to take out 100 to win The World Matchplay. He did just that hitting two double tops to win it in style. See match stats below.
