Humphries defends his title

Humphries defends his title – On Sunday Luke Humphries defended his Players Championship Finals title, lifting the trophy in front of a full house in Minehead. In the first round Humphries breezed past Gabriel Clemens, winning six legs to two. Then Humphries faced Barney in the second round, and just like the first game he comfortably won. He beat Raymond six legs to three, to go through to the last 16 of the Players Championship Finals.

Next up for Luke, it was the Aussie number one, Damon Heta. The game started off very tight, and it was Damon Heta who was 3-2 going into the first break. However, after that Humphries started to dominate. He won four legs on the bounce to completely flip the game on its head, and put himself 6-3 up. This gave Humphries the momentum to go on and win the game, 10-6 and progress through to the Quarter Finals. See match stats below.

Humphries defends his title – Quarter Final

Ryan Joyce was the opponent for Luke Humphries in the Quarter Finals. Humphries started the better player and blew Joyce away in the first session, heading into the break 4-1 up. Joyce did manage to pull a few legs back, but this wasn’t enough to stop Humphries from winning ten legs to five, even though Humphries was a bit under par. See match stats below.

Humphries defends his title – Semi Final

Luke Humphries came up against the Dutchman, Dirk van Dijvenbode in the Semi Finals. Dirk started well and took advantage of Humphries not being at his best. Dirk lead 3-2 going into the first break. The Dutchman carried on taking advantage of Luke missing doubles, and found himself three legs clear of Humphries, with the score sat on 5-2. It was Dirk’s turn to start missing doubles. This allowed Humphries to pull the game back level at seven legs a piece, making him big favourite to go on and win the match. After this Humphries started to really kick on. He hit a 12 dart leg to make it 8-7, and then went on to win the match 11-8, to go through to the Final of the Players Championship Finals. See match stats below.

The Final

It was Luke v Luke in the Final. The two best players in the world battling it out, one thing was for sure, the crowd were certainly in for a treat. Humphries started the better player, and that was reflected in the score line as he led 4-1 going into the first break. Humphries continued to dominate, however Littler did manage to pull the game back to 6-3, when he reeled in the big fish, taking out 170. Luke Littler continued to pull legs back. In the eleventh leg he took out 164, which put him one away from Humphries. Littler then went on to win the next leg, which made it seven legs a piece, and put another twist into this fantastic game of darts. However, Humphries showed why he is the best player in the world at this moment in time, by winning the next four legs, to win the game 11-7 and defend his Players Championship Finals title.
