England Win World Cup

England Win World Cup – Eight years on from their previous win England are crowned World Cup of Darts champions again. Let’s take a look at how they did it. England were one of the top four seeds in this tournament so therefore they got to skip the group stages and go straight into the knockouts where they came up against France. England were strong favorites going into this game however France took an early lead after taking out 56 to go 2-1 up. This lead did not last long as England then won three legs on the bounce to put them four legs to two up and back in control of the match. The English pair of Luke Humphries and Michael Smith continued to dominate the game and ended up comfortably winning 8-3 to go through to the Quarter Finals. See match stats below.

England Win World Cup – Quarter Finals

Next the English duo came against a strong Northern Ireland team. The game started as the crowd would hope for, loads of big scores and a real high quality affair. In the sixth leg England started to show their quality. Smith and Humphries took out 310 in six darts to go 4-2 up. Luke followed Michael’s maximum with a nice 130 checkout finishing on double 5 to really get the crowd going. Then something similar happened in the next leg. The pair of them took out 280 in six darts. This time they both hit 140s but it was Humphries again with the checkout finishing on double 10 after firing two in the treble 20 to send England 5-2 up at the break. After the game resumed Northern Ireland did pull a couple of legs back but it was more dominance from England as they cruised into the Semi Finals winning 8-4. See match stats below.

England Win World Cup – Semi Finals

The Semi Final was a propper grudge match, it was England v Scotland. There was a lot of talk from the Scottish duo Gary Anderson and Peter Wright in the build up how they’re going to smash the English and send them home. So this match had added needle, if it needed anymore. It was another brilliant start to the match from England as they quickly went into a three one lead against a Scottish team who wasn’t playing too badly themselves. Scotland pulled a leg straight back with a 12 darter, you could see the roar of emotion from both players when Anderson hit the double 11. The seventh leg saw Anderson crucially miss the chance to take out 44 when he hit the dart in the five when going for double tops. This then gave Smith the chance to hit double 5 and he did just that to send England 5-2 up.

After the break Scotland hit seven perfect darts, coming close to a nine darter which has never been done in the World Cup of Darts double format ever before. However they still managed to hit an eleven dart leg pulling the match back to 5-3. There was controversy in the tenth leg as Andersons foot stepped over the line when throwing the last dart. This left Scotland on nine instead of eight. He turned around for the crowd and did the signal for VAR, which the German Crowd found very amusing. This did not affect the end result of the leg as Peter Wright kept his cool and took out nine to bring the game back to 6-4. England swept away Scotland in the final two legs winning the game 8-4, moving them one leg away from becoming World Cup of Darts Champions. See match stats below.

England Win World Cup – Final

Onto the Final, it was a match up between favourites England and dark horses Austria. England like they’ve done in every match started the better team going two legs to nil up. It should’ve been three the way the started the next leg hitting six perfect darts. However that was all wasted when Smith missed three darts at double. Rodriguez then stepped up to pin double ten and make the game 2-1. Humphries showed why he is world number one in the next leg checking out 92 by hitting twenty then two doubles eighteens. This put England 3-1 ahead. It was Rodriguez who missed three darts at double in the next leg to allow England to go 4-1 up heading into the break.

England and especially Humphries continued how he left off, checking out 151 to put England in a strong position, 5-1 up against the Austrians. Crucially Austria held their throw in the next leg which just about kept them in the match. England knew all they had to do was keep holding their throw and they would be champions. They did just that in the next leg with Humphries taking out another big finish, this time 121 to put England 6-2 in front. The Austrians showed real fight to get back into the match winning back to back legs breaking the England throw. This made the game 6-4 going into the next break.

After the break England held their throw to pull them three legs ahead of Austria. Humphries was putting on a finishing masterclass in this game and it continued in the twelfth leg when he took out 130 making it his third ton plus checkout of the day. Austria held throw in the next leg to make the game 8-5. You thought three ton plus finishes was a lot, well Luke made it four in the fifteenth leg when he put away 112 to move England 9-5 up and one leg away from victory. Yet again Austria showed their fight, Suljovic took out 98 to keep them in this game. England kept their cool in the final leg and held their throw to become World Cup of Darts Champions. There was so much emotion on stage from Smith and Humphries and they are only the second ever duo to win the World Cup of darts for England. See match stats below.
